Nottingham Forest boss Mark Warburton was the man in charge when Glasgow Rangers brought Clint Hill to Ibrox last summer.

Mark Warburton’s time as Rangers boss following their promotion to the Scottish Premiership may not be remembered too fondly by the Ibrox faithful, but there is one signing that 54-year-old can be proud of.

When the Gers signed Clint Hill on a one-year contract, it appeared that the deal was done with one eye on a potential coaching role at Murray Park once the 38-year-old hung up his boots. However, the transfer has arguably proved to be the best deal that the Light Blues did last summer.

While the competition has not been high in that sense, it is fair to say that Hill has been a good player for Rangers throughout the campaign, and has surely been their most reliable defender in what has been an extremely frustrating season.

Nevertheless, Hill goes into the final weeks of the season with no new deal agreed for next term, so perhaps Warburton should look to repeat the trick by bringing the veteran to the City Ground on a short-term contract if he is allowed to leave Ibrox.

Only hapless Rotherham have conceded more goals than Forest this term, and they go into the final day in an incredibly precarious position, with one goal being the only thing that is separating them from the bottom three.

Whatever division Forest end up playing in next year, their former loanee – he made five appearances for the club in 2011 – may be worth taking a punt on as he has shown at Ibrox this year that his age is not holding him back.

If he did join, it may not capture the imagination of Forest fans hoping to see a big improvement following an incredibly disappointing year, but as he would be available on a free, he would surely be a worthwhile addition to the ranks for a year due to his reliability and consistency.
