Newcastle United need goals and the Italian knows how to get them.

According to a recent report from Football Italia, Bologna are considering a move for Italy international Giuseppe Rossi with the striker not in his current club Fiorentina’s plans for next season.

But while a switch to another Italian side makes sense, should a former club of his consider a move of their own?

Newcastle United need more fire-power next season as they attempt to make their stay in the Championship as short as possible.

While they have youthful strikers in the form of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez and Adam Armstrong, it is strongly felt that Magpies manager Rafa Benitez needs to bring in an older goal-scorer and at 29, Rossi fits the bill.

He may also feel he has unfinished business in England having come through the ranks at Manchester United only to get limited chances before his exit, scoring four goals in 12 senior starts.

During his time at Old Trafford Rossi spent a brief loan spell at St James’ Park, but that did not go much better, although it is worth noting that he was very young at the time.

Now considerably more experienced, and with a fine record in Spain and Italy, could Newcastle tempt Rossi back to England?

Some fans will dismiss the suggestion out of hand, but Rossi averaged almost a goal every other game in both La Liga and Serie A, while he was regarded as one of the best natural finishers during his time at Old Trafford.

At his best, the Italian would excel in the Championship, and he would still be young enough to then make an impact in the Premier League if Newcastle earn instant promotion.

Rossi scored 82 goals during his time at Villarreal and last season’s loan return to La Liga – with Levante – saw him net six times in 17 matches.

Many fans feel Rossi left England too soon and Newcastle are big enough to pull off what would be quite a coup for a player not yet ready to take a step into the second tier, but potentially willing to do so if it means proving the remaining doubters wrong.
