Should Newcastle United try and offload Jesus Gamez this month?
Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that Newcastle are considering a move for Crystal Palace left-back Pape Souare, with Chelsea’s Kenedy looking more and more unlikely.
Newcastle’s lack of depth in that position was exposed earlier in the season when Paul Dummett missed four months through injury, with Chancel Mbemba and Javier Manquillo depusiting for the 26-year-old to mixed reviews it must be said.
Consequently, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez looks like he’s getting serious about a left-back and Souare is the latest man linked to the North-East club.
But if it materialises then it gives Benitez a chance to offload somebody who would surely become surplus to requirements: Jesus Gamez.
The 32-year-old defender, signed for £1.5 million 18 months ago, has managed seven league appearances for United in the Championship and Premier League since arriving, with injury curtailing his involvement for the most part.
But the Spaniard is a big earner, taking home around £35,000 per week according to The Star and shifting that salary off the wage bill can only be good for cash-strapped Newcastle.
You get the feeling that every penny counts for Benitez – who still doesn’t know his transfer budget – in this transfer window and freeing up that kind of money could go a long way toward attracting players who could actually play an important role for United.
The Spanish manager confirmed to The Chronicle today that he was making good strides in his return from injury, and Benitez should hope that he’s fit before the transfer window closes to strengthen the chances of finding a buyer.
