Newcastle United had been chasing a deal for Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala in the early part of the transfer window.
City want to bring in Evans from West Brom, but Pep Guardiola’s side must sell Mangala to make room for the 29-year-old.
City are looking to fit in with Financial Fair Play guidelines, and may have to sell Mangala before completing a deal for Evans.
The Star suggest that City were looking for a big fee for the French defender, but their asking price has been significantly reduced now.
Guardiola’s side are willing to listen to offers for the defender, and that could just put him back on Newcastle United’s radar.
Newcastle were linked with a move for Mangala in the early part of the transfer window in the Chronicle, but could not get a deal over the line.
However, Rafael Benitez’s side may have more luck if they went back in for Mangala now, with City desperate to sell.
And Mangala’s arrival at Newcastle would be a significant upgrade on the defensive options available to Benitez at the moment.
