Jose Enrique is available on free transfer. Should Newcastle United make a move?
Rafael Benitez has been left frustrated with Newcastle United’s transfer activity, as the Magpies failed to land a player on the deadline day.
Left-back is one of the key areas where Benitez wanted to add players, but the Spaniard wasn’t granted his wish.
Newcastle were heavily linked with a move for Argentine left-back Nicolas Tagliafico, but the Tyneside club could not pull off the deal.
On the deadline day, Newcastle were in talks to sign Southampton defender Matt Targett on loan, but to everyone’s surprise they failed to agree to a temporary deal.
At best, Benitez can scout the free agents at the moment to try and fill the void on a temporary basis. With this in mind, should they move for their former player Jose Enrique?
The Spaniard was one of the top players for the Magpies and spent four seasons at the club before moving to Liverpool in 2011.
The 31-year-old lost his position to Alberto Moreno, and fell out of favour at Anfield and was freed in 2016.
A pacey defender with loads of Premier League experience, he could fancy making a return to his former club if given an opportunity.
Newcastle considered signing him on loan in January 2016, but they reportedly pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute.
His move to Real Zaragoza didn’t work out well either, and now he is looking for a club.
Enrique is not an ideal signing, but he could be a decent option on a free transfer for the Magpies.
