Newcastle United are looking to sign a left-back this summer, as Rafael Benitez tries to strengthen his defensive options.

Newcastle United may have missed a trick, after Gael Clichy left Manchester City to join Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir yesterday.

Newcastle are hunting for a new left-back this summer, as Rafael Benitez looks to add competition for Paul Dummett at St. James’ Park.

So far, Newcastle’s search has seen them linked with Andrew Robertson and Kieran Gibbs, as per the Northern Echo.

However, Newcastle could have made a smart move by offering Clichy a deal to move to Tyneside.

City allowed Clichy to leave on a free transfer this summer, and he could have been ideally suited to Newcastle’s needs.

The former Arsenal may not have offered the Magpies a long-term option at left-back, but he would have been an excellent stop-gap measure, as Newcastle reacclimatise to Premier League life.

Clichy has proven over his 14 year stay in England that he is an exceptional defender, and his arrival at Newcastle would have bolstered Rafael Benitez’s options.

And, unless the Magpies manage to sign a very talented left-back this summer, they may look back with regret that they didn’t take their opportunity to snap up Clichy.
