Should Newcastle United go after Liverpool’s Danny Ings instead of Nicolai Jorgensen?

Newcastle United remain heavily linked with a striker.

The latest name to crop up is Nicolai Jorgensen of Feyenoord who, according to The Shields Gazette, was the subject of a failed £12 million bid by Newcastle, who will go back again with an improved offer.

The North-East publication went on to claim that one-time target Danny Ings wants a permanent move away from Liverpool, not a loan. With that in mind, should Rafael Benitez abandon his pursuit of Jorgensen and spend whatever money he has on signing the Reds striker?

Jorgensen has only managed 34 goals in 63 games for the Eredivisie club, which isn’t a bad record but considering he’s 27, he’s already at the peak of his powers and his record in an inferior division does not suggest that he is going to take the Premier League by storm.

Benitez is said to be willing to part with £20 million to sign the Dane, which is crazy and if the Magpies boss is willing to put all his eggs in one basket then why not move for the 25-year-old?

The former Burnley hitman has endured an injury-hit last two years at Anfield, but he looks on the mend and his previous stint with the Clarets suggests he’s a much better, younger option than Jorgensen.

During the 2014-15 campaign, Ings fired 11 Premier League goals in 35 games, but there is every chance he could vastly improve on that figure based on the fact he would have better players than George Boyd, Scott Arfield and Michael Kightly feeding him chances.

Newcastle fans might say it’s a risk when you consider his injuries, but staking your Premier League survival on a 27-year-old with a similar goal-to-game ratio in the Netherlands as Luuk De Jong – who bombed during his loan on Tyneside four years ago – is arguably a bigger one.
