Newcastle United have been linked with Danny Ings, but are they looking at the wrong Liverpool striker?

Newcastle United’s desperate need for a goalscorer was highlighted again on Saturday as they drew a blank for the second successive game in losing 1-0 to Arsenal.

The Magpies have only managed 16 goals in 18 Premier League matches this season and slipped into the relegation zone this weekend courtesy of a seventh loss from eight.

Although they have been more vulnerable at the back lately, finding the back of the net has been Newcastle’s main problem with Joselu and Dwight Gayle joint-top scorers with three apiece.

According to The Guardian, Liverpool striker Danny Ings will be a target again in January, after his availabilty was explored in the summer while he recovered from injury.

However, The Guardian adds that the Ings transfer scene could be crowded by West Bromwich Albion, Crystal Palace and Stoke City, so Newcastle need to have other targets in mind.

The Sun understands that Ing’s Liverpool teammate Daniel Sturridge is free to leave Anfield on loan in January.

Although Sturridge’s injury record makes him a gamble for any suitor, Ings would be no less of a flight risk having played only 37 minutes of Premier League football since 2015.

Sturridge has an outstanding scoring return for the Reds – 63 goals in 90 starts – and has the personality to thrive under the pressure cooker of the St James’ Park atmosphere.

The 28-year-old wants a move which will keep him in England manager Gareth Southgate’s plans, and scoring the goals to keep Newcastle up could punch his ticket to the World Cup.
