In comments published by the Sun, Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie has admitted he would like to rejoin former club Feyenoord after struggling to get sufficient game-time at St Mary’s, but Newcastle United may be wise to test the water once his loan spell at Club Brugge comes to an end.

After all, Newcastle were interested in signing the Dutchman prior to his move to the Saints – as reported by the Mirror – and the Magpies are still in need of quality midfield additions, with questions remaining over Isaac Hayden’s ability to cut it at the highest level.

It would be easy to look at Clasie’s struggles at Southampton and write him off as a flop. However his talent remains and, if he feels he has unfinished business in England, a move to St. James’ Park could suit all parties.

A couple of injuries to key players and Newcastle would be struggling to field a strong midfield pairing, but Clasie would offer them more strength in depth and potentially arrive with the mindset of proving Southampton wrong.

At 26, he should be reaching the peak of his career, not wondering where his next permanent home will be, and Newcastle could get the Netherlands international for a cut-price fee given Southampton’s apparent willingness to part company.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is likely to have plenty of targets for both January and next summer, but do not be surprised if Clasie is one the club looks to revisit.
