The Southampton midfielder is reportedly surplus to requirements and he could go down a storm at Newcastle United.

According to Sky Sports News, Southampton are willing to cash in on midfielder Jordy Clasie this summer, and former suitors Newcastle United would be wise to renew their interest with time running out to make new signings.

Back in 2015, the Mirror claimed the Saints were battling the Magpies for the Dutch international, and while Southampton got their man on that occasion, it could be second time lucky for a Newcastle side in desperate need of quality reinforcements.

Rafa Benitez has made no secret of his frustration during the current transfer window, with inflated fees often demanded for mediocre players, and while Newcastle have made some canny signings in the form of Florien Lejeune, Javier Manquillo, Jacob Murphy and Mikel Moreno, that is not enough if the Magpies want to be challenging at the right end of the table this season.

Clasie arrived at St. Mary’s with a big reputation having excelled at former club Feyenoord, scoring eight goals and providing 24 assists in 155 appearances. However an ankle injury prevented him from making the start he would have liked at his new club and last season he slipped down the pecking order, featuring only 24 times in all competitions.

In total he has played 49 times for Southampton, and at 26 he is arguably reaching his peak despite being deemed surplus to requirements at St. Mary’s.

He may not have hit the heights on the South Coast but there is no doubting his talent and if he finds a club where he can play week in, week out, he could blossom into the player many expected when he was first making headlines in his homeland.

Newcastle need players and Clasie seemingly needs a new home. It only remains to be seen if the Magpies maintain their interest two years on, and if a deal can be struck that suits all parties.
