Newcastle United have been linked with Salomon Rondon, but is Jay Rodriguez the West Bromwich Albion forward they should actually be targeting?
Newcastle United appear to be at the front of the queue for Salomon Rondon, with the Chronicle reporting their interest in the West Bromwich Albion striker.
One of the most appealing aspects about Rondon is his release clause, with the 28-year-old available for £16m following the Baggies’ relegation from the Premier League.
With transfer funds limited at St James’ Park, manager Rafa Benitez is always on the hunt for a bargain and with recruitment upfront a priority this deal could tick several boxes.
Is Rondon the right attacker?
Several players are expected to depart the Hawthorns this summer following West Brom’s drop into the Championship and perhaps the Magpies should be looking at other forwards at the club who are available.
One such player is Jay Rodriguez, who has recently been linked with former side Burnley by the Daily Mail, with the 28-year-old actually top scoring for the West Midlands outfit in 2017/18 ahead of Rondon.
Rodriguez is likely to cost a little more, with Sky Sports reporting upwards of £20m, and doesn’t possess the same physicality as his Venezuelan teammate, but is a much more versatile option in the final third with the ability to play out wide or as a number ten as well.
