Newcastle United should perhaps try and take advantage of the Championship side’s potential need to sell this summer.
With the two sides in different divisions, Newcastle rarely have much to say on what is going on at Norwich – apart from when Josh Murphy does something that grabs the headlines. In that situation, the frequent tongue in cheek response from the Toon Army is to suggest that the Magpies signed the wrong player during the previous summer window.
Sky Sports reported last year that Newcastle had paid £12 million to sign Jacob Murphy from the Canaries. And while it is definitely too soon to write the youngster off, the fact that he has scored just one goal and provided one assist in the Premier League hints that he was probably not the right target ahead of a season where Rafa Benitez’s men were simply looking to re-establish themselves at the highest level.
Patience with Murphy should pay off. But perhaps Newcastle should take note of the Daily Mirror reporting that Norwich may need to sell some of their key players this summer with their parachute payments coming to an end.
The Mirror reports that Josh Murphy is one of the players that Norwich may have to sell, and there are a cluster of Premier League sides eyeing a move for the starlet. Newcastle are not one of them, but perhaps they should be.
The 23-year-old has outshone his twin – albeit at a lower level – with 10 goals in all competitions, including an absolute stunner in the recent win over Aston Villa and an audacious little dink against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.
Murphy looks ready to play at a higher level, and a move to St James’ Park may not only see Newcastle benefit from signing one of the most lethal wingers in the second tier right now, but it may also have a positive impact on his brother.
It may not be out of the question to suggest that having his brother alongside him will help Jacob Murphy as he continues to settle in, and that could perhaps help the £12 million ace look a completely different player next season to the one who has rarely threatened to make an impact this term.
It would be another gamble for Newcastle, but Josh Murphy is flying right now. And, for once, this deal could possibly have the impact of two signings if he is able to help his brother after a difficult first year with the Magpies.
