Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Swansea City striker Bafetimbi Gomis on a couple of occasions previously.
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez
With Rafa Benitez looking to put a Newcastle squad together capable of handling the demands of the Premier League, he may perhaps want to consider a move for a striker who is no stranger to the Magpies and who has just enjoyed a stunning season in Ligue 1.
Bafetimbi Gomis was linked with a switch to St James’ Park back in January 2016, having also been a Newcastle target in 2014 (via Shields Gazette). But while those moves may never have taken place, his form out on loan with Marseille should arguably convince the club to now consider trying to finally bring him in.
The 31-year-old spent the campaign on loan from Swansea, and made a massive impact, scoring 20 times in 31 league games and being made captain early on in the season.
Paul Clement has previously alluded to the fact that he would be open to having him back at the Liberty Stadium, but also mentioned that he had heard that the striker may want to stay in France (via BBC Sport).
Swansea City’s Bafetimbi Gomis has been lethal in France this season
Even if that is the case that Gomis wants to stay at Marseille – where he has formed a lethal partnership with Florian Thauvin – Newcastle should arguably make a move for him while his future is up in the air.
The forward’s record in the Premier League is not terrible when you consider that a considerable number of his appearances came from the bench, and there is no question that he will be high on confidence following his year in France.
So while Benitez may have other targets, perhaps it may be worth him considering a player who the club have seemingly wanted on a couple of occasions in previous years now that he has made, by far, the best case to be on their radar.
