Newcastle United are reportedly amongst the host of clubs keen on signing Swansea City goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
Like all of the teams that have been relegated this season, Swansea boast a handful of players that should arguably be nowhere near the bottom three in the Premier League. And based on his form over the last few years, Lukasz Fabianski is one of them.
Fabianski’s performances in goal often gave the Swans a chance in games that they had little right to take anything from, so it is little surprise that a host of sides are ready to hand him the chance to stay in the top flight – with the Guardian reporting that Newcastle, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Watford are all monitoring his situation.
While Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that Martin Dubravka’s loan move at St James’ Park is set to be made permanent, it could certainly be argued that the Magpies would be pulling off a very smart piece of business if they managed to sign the 33-year-old – who reportedly earns £50,000-a-week at the Liberty Stadium, according to Spotrac.
Should Rafa Benitez keep Dubravka and manage to bring in Fabianski, then Karl Darlow’s future with Newcastle would surely have a huge question mark lingering over it.
With Freddie Woodman perhaps a few years away from being ready to push to be the side’s number one, it may not be out of the question that Dubravka and Fabianski could battle for the number one spot until Woodman is ready to take the gloves.
That scenario would leave Darlow fairly redundant, and that should perhaps tempt Benitez to consider offering the 27-year-old to the Swans as part of the deal for Fabianski.
With Swansea preparing for life in the second tier, getting a keeper in who has played a key role in securing promotion previously would soften the blow of losing the Poland international. And it is difficult to imagine that Darlow would have many qualms about a potential move if the alternative is to stick around and battle with Rob Elliot to be considered third choice.
With a number of sides keen on Fabianski, Newcastle need to use any advantage they can get to push themselves to the front of the queue. Offering Darlow in exchange seems to be an option that would suit all parties.
