Newcastle United are expected to be extremely busy during this summer’s transfer window.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez
The Magpies successfully secured promotion to the Premier League this season, and there is a genuine feeling of optimism emanating from St James’ Park with a man of Rafa Benitez’ calibre at the helm.
The Spaniard will of course need to strengthen his options over the course of the summer, however, and the addition of someone with a large amount of experience of playing in the top flight will surely feature highly on his wish list.
A useful option for Newcastle would be Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini, with the Belgian’s future at Old Trafford far from certain.
His contract is due to expire in the summer of 2018, so the Toon could find themselves some value in the market, if they made a move for the 29-year-old.
And it would be no surprise to see Benitez move for the former Everton man – he wanted him three years ago during his time in charge of Napoli, according to the Guardian.
The 74-capped Belgium international would offer the Magpies an entirely different option in the middle of the park, and his versatility would mean that Benitez could deploy him in either the number 10 role behind the main striker, or in a more defensive position, sitting just in front of the back four.
Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini
Despite his critics, Fellaini is still an incredibly useful player, especially from set-pieces – both offensively and defensively. There are not too many players more accomplished in the air than the 6ft 5 in Red Devils star, and that in itself should attract the Newcastle boss, with their struggles from defending corners and free-kicks this season being well documented.
He would certainly improve the options currently available to the Spaniard, and he should test United’s resolve this summer by making an offer for him.
Fellaini is not exactly the most popular of players at Old Trafford, and there will likely be little resistance from United, should the Toon come in with a substantial offer.
