Newcastle United are in the market for another defender, so perhaps Bayern Munich’s Holger Badstuber should be on their radar.
Bayern Munich’s Holger Badstuber
A recent report from the Daily Mirror suggested that Swansea were planning to target Bayern Munich defender Holger Badstuber at the end of his contract this summer. But with Newcastle reportedly wanting to significantly bolster their options at the back, perhaps it should be Rafa Benitez who should be targeting a move.
The Chronicle reported in June that Benitez wanted to sign two new centre-backs this summer as the Magpies prepare for their return to the Premier League this season.
With Badstuber available on a free transfer, he would arguably be an excellent addition to the squad, having spent around 15 years on Bayern’s books, winning five Bundesliga titles and featuring in the Champions League during his time at the Allianz Arena.
Not only can the 28-year-old add to Benitez’s centre-back options, but he is also capable of playing on the left-hand side of defence, which may be especially useful given the lack of options in that position.

And as a deal would not cost Newcastle anything apart from whatever wages and clauses are involved in the contract, Benitez should still have the majority of his transfer funds to invest in other areas of the squad.
The Daily Mirror recently suggested that Benitez was becoming frustrated with the club’s lack of activity in the window, so perhaps moving for Badstuber would be the ideal way to start strengthening the side’s ranks and getting Benitez back on side.
