Newcastle United are preparing for their return to the Premier League, so perhaps a move for the Manchester United defender should be on their radar.
Manchester United’s Chris Smalling is set to be sold this summer
As Rafa Benitez continues his preparations for Newcastle’s return to the Premier League this coming season, one report coming from the Telegraph should perhaps be of interest to him.
According to the Telegraph, Manchester United plan to sell Chris Smalling this summer and could be prepared to accept just £15 million for the centre-back as a host of top flight clubs chase his signature.

Though they have not been linked, it could certainly be argued that the Magpies should make sure that they are one of the sides interested in signing the England international as he could be an excellent addition to Benitez’s ranks.
The 27-year-old has featured fairly regularly for the Red Devils since arriving at Old Trafford from Fulham back in 2010, so could provide some invaluable experience to a Newcastle defence that is arguably in need of some additional top flight quality.

And while moves to any of the interested sides may appeal to Smalling – who has two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, an EFL Cup and Europa League medal on his CV – the chance to make the switch to a club with the stature of Newcastle will surely be as tempting as any other offer, especially as the fact that they are just coming off a promotion probably means that he will stand a better chance of enjoying regular first-team football if he joins the Magpies.
Benitez appears to have the makings of a strong top flight squad already, but adding players like Smalling would arguably make the transition back to the highest level much easier, so joining the race to sign him surely makes perfect sense.
