The Portuguese ace is wanted by West Ham United, but Newcastle United should gatecrash the party.
Magpies boss Rafa Benitez really has his work cut-out at St James’ Park this season, if yesterday’s performance against Spurs is anything to go by.
Jonjo Shelvey is a real talent, of that there is no question, but the manner in which he let his teammates down against Tottenham was typical of how his career has played out to date.
Benitez will surely be busy in the transfer market over the course of the next three weeks, and the addition of an established central midfielder might just feature in his plans now, especially after Shelvey’s indiscretions.
And with this in mind, Newcastle should make a bold play for William Carvalho, who has been heavily linked with a move to West Ham United, with the Mirror claiming that a £36 million deal is close.
Rafa should gatecrash the party though, and attempt to bring the Portugal international to Tyneside.
The 25-year-old Sporting Lisbon ace is an absolute powerhouse of a midfielder, and his tenacious playing style is ideally suited to the Premier League.
Despite his aggressive approach the game, he possesses high levels of discipline – something that the Toon currently desperately lack in the middle of the park.
Carvalho is also very comfortable in possession, and possesses an impressive array of passing skills. He would be ideally suited to play in the deep-lying midfield position for the Magpies, providing an extra layer of protection for Newcastle’s back-four.
Whilst £36 million seems like a lot of money on the face of it, in today’s current transfer market it actually represents somewhat of a bargain for someone of the Sporting man’s ilk, and Rafa should not hesitate to bring him to Tyneside.
