West Ham are ready to sell Robert Snodgrass so should Newcastle look to beat Sunderland to his signature?

After a difficult six months at West Ham United after joining from Hull City in January, the Hammers are willing to let Robert Snodgrass leave the club this summer, according to the Telegraph.

The report goes on to say that Brighton and Hove Albion and Sunderland are leading the race to sign the 29-year-old, whom West Ham value at around £8m.

Yet while Snodgrass’ 15 appearances for the East London club in the latter half of the 2016/17 campaign were admittedly disappointing, has the midfielder really declined so much that he should be playing back in the Championship with the Black Cats?

After all, it was decent stints with Norwich City and Hull in the top flight previously that convinced the Hammers to pay £10.2m (BBC) for the Scot in the first place.

Therefore, with recruitment needed out wide should Newcastle United be looking to beat their fellow newly promoted side and also their great rivals and bring Snodgrass to St James’ Park instead?

With the ability to play on either wing, the Scotland international would certainly provide decent competition for Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie, with manager Rafa Benitez needing more options in the final third.

Signing Snodgrass would admittedly be something of a gamble because of his West Ham form, but having proving himself with the Tigers and at Norwich before, it could also potentially be a shrewd move.
