The Watford ace has been heavily linked with a move to West Bromwich Albion, but Newcastle United should gatecrash the party.
Magpies boss Rafa Benitez will be desperate to bolster his attacking ranks at St James’ Park before the transfer window slams shut tomorrow, with his side in desperate need of more firepower in forward areas.
The Spaniard has suffered numerous blows in his pursuit of an established hitman so far this month, with deals for Daniel Sturridge and Nicolai Jorgensen both collapsing during advance stages of discussion.
With this in mind, Benitez should now surely switch his attention to Hornets striker Troy Deeney, who has been heavily linked with a move to West Brom, according to Sky Sports.
The 29-year-old Watford man would be an excellent signing for Newcastle, and would offer them a fantastic focal point from which to build their attacks, what with his competence at playing with his back to goal and holding up the football.
Deeney isn’t the most prolific of strikers, but he is no slouch either, having scored 102 goals in 295 league appearances for the Hertfordshire outfit thus far.
He would offer the Magpies a much needed physical presence through the middle, and would free up space for the likes of Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez to operate.
After the Baggies snatched Daniel Sturridge from Newcastle’s grasp, bringing the Watford man to the north east represents a fantastic chance for them to gain revenge on the Black Country outfit, and give them a dose of their own medicine.
With just 36 hours remaining until the transfer window slams shut, the Toon will obviously have to get their skates on, if they hope to bring Deeney to Tyneside, but if Rafa managers to get a deal over the line, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for Newcastle.
