Newcastle United were linked with Danny Welbeck in the summer, and should consider a bid for the striker during the January transfer window.
Newcastle fans would have been forgiven for feeling very concerned when Teamtalk reported in the summer that the Magpies were eyeing a loan deal for Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck.
The report suggested that Newcastle were willing to cover Welbeck’s £100,000-a-week wages to get a loan deal across the line. But while some may have worried when the reports emerged, many of the Toon Army may now be wishing that Rafa Benitez had got a deal done.
The Magpies won for the first time this season at the weekend, but goals continue to prove to be a problem for Benitez’s side. It does already appear that a relegation scrap is on the cards.
It seems fair to say that January is going to be huge for Newcastle.
The Magpies’ track record suggests that Benitez is going to have to be canny in the market if he wants to make significant improvements to the squad in a couple of months.
And that is why Newcastle should seriously consider taking a gamble on Welbeck.
It is not clear what Arsenal’s asking price is, but Newcastle should consider a move. It, of course, has the potential to be a deal that backfires, but if Welbeck stays fit, then perhaps it could be the sort of signing that makes a real difference at St James’ Park.
He has not been as prolific as he should have been, but it is a daunting task trying to break into Arsenal’s forward line right now given the options ahead of him in the pecking order.
If he can enjoy a run of games, Welbeck would arguably be better than any other striker in Newcastle’s current ranks.
It would be a roll of the dice given his injury record and potential wage demands. But Newcastle may well need to take a couple of gambles when the window opens if they want to improve their survival hopes.
