Newcastle are expected to be busy this summer, but should they move for Celtic’s McGregor?
Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has arguably enjoyed his best season north of the border with the Scottish champions and is reportedly attracting interest from the Premier League.
The Sun claim Bournemouth and Watford are looking to land 24-year-old McGregor this summer, after the Scotland international has scored 11 goals and turned provider on a further eight occasions under Brendan Rodgers.
The former Notts County loanee has shown just what he is capable of, as well as offering versatility to the Bhoys’ side by featuring in holding midfield, attacking midfield, left wing and even on the left side of defence.
It is believed that McGregor has the “appetite” to play down south in his career following his loan spell with Notts County, but Celtic want a decent price for their academy product with three years remaining on his current deal.
The report claims he could be available for a fee of £10million, and that should tempt Rafa Benitez and Newcastle to join the race to land the left-footed star’s signature.
The Toon boast plenty of options in central midfield, with the resurgence of Mo Diame coming at the right time alongside Jonjo Shelvey. However, the latter was linked elsewhere in January and Newcastle may face a fight to keep him.
Isaac Hayden has struggled, while Mikel Merino has spent as much time injured as he has on the pitch. A new central midfielder is required, with Jack Colback and Henri Saivet expected to be sold after loans this season.
Owner Mike Ashley is likely to back Benitez this summer though it is yet to be seen how deep he will delve into his pockets, but at £10million McGregor boasts the quality expected of a player well beyond that price.
Newcastle must join the race for the Celtic star and elbow their Premier League rivals out of the way in order to add top-quality depth to their midfield in a player that has shown he can play against the best – scoring against Bayern this season.
