As reported by Sky Sports, Ajax have made contact with Southampton about signing Serbian winger Dusan Tadic ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Tadic, who joined the club in 2014, has made 162 appearances for the south coast club and scored 23 goals, but appears to be nearing the end of his stint at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The 29-year-old is out of contract in the summer of 2020, and there has been no talk of an extension, and the Telegraph claim a transfer fee of around £18 million could be enough to see him make a switch, taking into account his status of being the club’s top scorer last season and general market inflation.

Tadic has plied his trade in the Netherlands before with Groningen and FC Twente and is understood to be happy to return in the colours of the nation’s biggest club Ajax – but Newcastle United should be doing all they can to try and prevent the move.

Rafa Benitez needs creative players after his team only scored 39 goals last season, and Tadic has proven he can be effective in the final third, whether that’s scoring goals himself of providing chances for teammates.

The loss of Kenedy back to Chelsea means the Magpies could really do with someone to operate from the left side, or the right with Matt Ritchie capable of switching over. The Chronicle claim Kenedy is the number one target for Benitez, but the Spaniard faces ‘stiff competition’ and could miss out.

At the end of the day, Tadic has a wealth of Premier League experience and is also pretty handy on set pieces, which has to prompt Newcastle into action with fans desperate to see some fresh faces ahead of the new season.
