Should Celtic take a look at Nathaniel Clyne on loan this summer?

Nathaniel Clyne of Liverpool arrives prior to kickoff during the Premier League match between Watford and Liverpool at Vicarage Road on May 1, 2017 in Watford, England.

One probably has to assume that Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is in the market for a right-back this summer.

His best option, Mikael Lustig, showed worrying signs of decline last season and it would be borderline negligible if the Northern Irishman didn’t give the veteran Swede some competition – well, better competition than Cristian Gamboa Anthony Ralston at the moment anyway.

The Celtic manager even took Moses Odubajo on trial earlier this summer but although Rodgers didn’t sign up the Englishman, it indicates that he’s interested in a right-back if nothing else.

With that in mind, should Rodgers take a look at a man who he once signed for Liverpool?

Nathaniel Clyne, who spent virtually the entire 2017-18 campaign out injured with a back problem, is fit again, but where does he fit into Jurgen Klopp’s plans at Anfield?

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez have leapfrogged him in the pecking order, meaning that Clyne, a £10 million signing by Rodgers, could be Klopp’s third-choice option at right-back.

Few would doubt if he sought to leave Merseyside this summer, and why shouldn’t Celtic try and sign him on loan initially?

He earns £70,000 per week [Silly Season], which is a major deterrent, but if the Reds subsidised part of his salary then it might not be all that unlikely.

In terms of quality, the 27-year-old blows Lustig out of the water. Lustig, 31, has posted some very questionable performances in Europe for the Hoops in recent seasons and Clyne would be a major upgrade in this respect.
