Should Moussa Dembele’s form persuade Celtic to join race for Zach Clough?

Celtic pulled off one of the signings of the summer when they landed Dembele, but could another youngster give them a chance to do it once again?

With Moussa Dembele enjoying a sensational start to the season at Celtic, Brendan Rodgers would be forgiven for looking to the Football League once again to try and find the Hoops’ next breakout star. And while that strategy may not always pay off, there is one name currently coming through the ranks that is attracting a huge amount of attention.

Bolton Wanderers striker Zach Clough is enjoying another promising campaign at the Macron Stadium, having already equalled his tally from last season with seven goals coming his first 16 games.

That form has attracted the likes of Everton, Leeds United and Wolves in recent times (via The Sun), and it appears that a bidding war could well be on the cards for the January transfer window. And perhaps Celtic should become the latest team to throw their name into the hat.

With Bolton’s financial future looking somewhat uncertain (via The Sun), the Bhoys may well be able to secure a deal as good as the one that brought Dembele to Parkhead for £500,000 in the summer (via Daily Mail).

And while some Celtic supporters may be sceptical about whether Clough can make that great an impact, it must be noted that his league record is marginally better than the one that persuaded the Hoops to go after Dembele, so there is perhaps no reason why he cannot go on and enjoy a similarly successful spell, especially with Rodgers’ recent record of getting the very best out of players.

What would also make Clough a useful addition to the Scottish Premiership leaders’ squad is the fact that he is more than comfortable playing out on the wing, which could prove important with Patrick Roberts’ loan set to end at the end of the season.

And given the fact that Celtic are frequently battling for trophies and look to be certainties to reach the Champions League qualifiers next season, it is fair to say that it would be incredibly difficult for Clough to turn them down should they enter the running.
