However, is there one boss from the Championship looking upwards and perhaps wishing he had bided his time a little longer to be in the running for either position currently?

That man is Garry Monk, who took charge at Middlesbrough over the summer after leaving Leeds United after just one season because of a change in ownership.

Having guided Leeds to seventh place against the odds in 2016/17, Monk’s stock was high before he moved to Boro, but disappointing results this time around will have seen that somewhat diminished.

The North Yorkshire club were among the promotion favourites after spending significant funds in the close season following relegation from the top flight, but a 3-0 home defeat to Derby County in their last outing leaves them 15 points off leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers and three points from the playoffs.

Unlike Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves and Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder, Monk is no longer being linked with jobs in the English top tier despite managing in the division before with Swansea City and the 38-year-old may be wondering whether he made the correct decision by moving to the Riverside, rather than being patient and waiting for a top flight vacancy to emerge.
