After Middlesbrough clocked up their 11th Premier League game without a goal following their 0-0 draw with Everton, a few Boro fans could be forgiven for wishing Jordan Rhodes was on the pitch.

The 27-year-old striker has seen first team opportunities incredibly limited at the Riverside Stadium, making just six appearances this season, to the point Boro allowed him to sign for Sheffield Wednesday in the January transfer window.

Within nine minutes of his home debut – and second Championship appearance for the Owls – Rhodes found the net with a brilliant downwards header against Birmingham City, helping Wednesday to a 3-0 win.

It seems bizarre that Boro boss Aitor Karanka allowed a natural goalscorer like Rhodes leave, especially now the club have signed Rudy Gestede from Aston Villa – with Gestede and Rhodes having worked together before at Blackburn Rovers.

In the 2014/15 season, Rhodes and Gestede scored 41 goals between them as they struck up one of the most feared strike partnerships in the Championship.

Given Boro are the Premier League’s lowest goalscorers with just 19 goals in 25 games, it seems odd that Karanka didn’t at least try Rhodes and Gestede together again, as that reunited partnership could have worked wonders.
