According to a report from Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are interested in signing Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez this summer, but Liverpool should surely challenge their north-west rivals for his signature.

The powerful, uncompromising centre-back is one of the best out and out defenders in the game, and his performances for Atleti and Uruguay over the past few years have been right up their with the very best.

Jürgen Klopp seems to be very close to achieving something very special at Anfield, and he has already been active during this summer’s transfer market, bringing in midfield duo Fabinho and Naby Keita for just under £100 million.

Many believe that the German still needs to sign another world-class centre-back, however, if he is to guide them to their first league title win since 1990.

And Gimenez would be just the ticket.

The 23-year-old’s playing style is quintessentially South American, in the sense that he is aggressive, tenacious, and plays with 100 per cent commitment at all times.

Those attributes make him ideally suited to the Premier League, and he would be an outstanding signing for Liverpool.

Whether the Merseyside outfit can beat their bitter rivals to his signature, though, remains to be seen, but it could be argued that Klopp is overseeing a far more exciting project at Anfield than the one that Jose Mourinho is in the middle of at Old Trafford.

According to the Guardian, Gimenez has a £56 million buy-out clause inserted into his current contract with Atleti, and in today’s day and age, that actually represents fantastic value for someone of his quality.

And if Liverpool do manage to bring the Uruguayan to Anfield, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for them.
