The Real Madrid star is a reported transfer target for Liverpool.
Reds boss Jürgen Klopp has already spent heavily this month, bringing Virgil van Dijk in from Southampton, for a fee believed to be worth £75 million, but he might just have to lay out even more money, if he is to guide his side to a successful campaign this season.
Philippe Coutinho has been heavily linked with a big-money move to Barcelona, with some reports claiming that it is only a matter of time before the Brazilian pitches up at the camp Nou.
If the 25-year-old does go on to leave Anfield, as expected, it will be an absolute necessity for Klopp to bring in a replacement for him.
Spanish media outlet Diario Gol claim that the German has identified Real Madrid ace Dani Ceballos as one of his primary targets this month, but surely Liverpool should be aiming higher than the Spaniard.
The 21-year-old is a real talent, that cannot be argued, but he is nowhere near Coutinho’s level, and he would not even be a like-for-like replacement for the Brazilian.
Ceballos is an orthodox central midfielder in every sense, and is by no means an accomplished winger, so a move for him from the Reds would seem to make little sense.
Unless, of course, Klopp has visions of converting him into a wide attacking player.
The problem with that notion is that Liverpool need players for the here and now, and if they are to have any chance of enjoying success both domestically and on the continent, Klopp should be looking at more ready-made options this month.
Ceballos is a good player, but he is not in Coutinho’s league.
