Leeds United have dished out a host of brand-spanking new contracts over the past couple of months.

With Pablo Hernandez out of contract at Elland Road in the summer it has been suggested that he might be the next to put pen to paper.

But Leeds must wait and assess how he does in the second half of the campaign before tying him down to a new deal.

Hernandez, who has four caps for Spain, is arguably the Whites’ most talented player but his performance level dipped in the second half of last season under Garry Monk and the Championship club need to be smart with their approach.

The former Swansea City man has only managed one goal – a penalty – and one assist in 11 Championship games this season and although his class is plain to see, his productivity needs to increase.

Hernandez has also only managed to create two ‘big chances’ according to Opta – he had six after 11 matches last term in a fact which illustrates his drop in performance.

Of course, he does not have a Chris Wood up front to create for this season, but overall Leeds are a more potent attacking force compared to Monk’s side. If anything, the chances should be coming more regular.

The former Al-Arabi playmaker will be 33 in April. His age is against him and unless he starts racking up goals and assists again then you wonder what Leeds have to gain in the long term by keeping hold of him.
