Should Leeds have rivalled Sheffield United to move for Birmingham’s Clayton Donaldson?

Leeds United have gambled on potential rather than proven commodities as they looked to replace last season’s top scorer Chris Wood.
The Whites looked abroad to bring in Pawel Cibicki, Jay-Roy Grot and Pierre-Michel Lasogga, none of who had previously played a club game in English football.
That is why it could be a mistake not to have brought in an experienced Championship forward just to balance out their options.

An ideal signing would have been new Sheffield United striker Clayton Donaldson, who made a transfer deadline day move from Birmingham City.
The Blades paid a nominal fee for the 33-year-old, who had been squeezed out of Birmingham as Harry Redknapp re-shaped his squad.

Born in Bradord, Donaldson is a Leeds United fan and could have relished the opportunity to represent the club.
He has scored 33 goals across the last three seasons and would have been a reliable option to lead the line or bring off the bench.
Whites boss Thomas Christiansen seems happy with his options, but Donaldson would have been an ideal late addition for Leeds to have brought in to complement the strikers they have.
