The Newcastle United centre-back would be a superb addition for Leeds United.

With the current turmoil surrounding the Whites in the wake of Garry Monk’s resignation as manager, it is easy to forget that they actually enjoyed a fairly successful Championship campaign this term, despite their ultimate failure to secure a play-off spot.

Whoever is appointed as Leeds manager has a lot of work to do this summer, not only in keeping some of the stars who shone brightest last term, but in bringing in some genuine quality to help supplement what is an already strong group of players.

One particular area of concern will be the central defensive area, with Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson having returned to their parent clubs, although the Swede is being tipped for a permanent switch to Elland Road.

With this in mind, an interesting option for the West Yorkshire outfit could be Magpies centre-back Ciaran Clark, albeit an extremely bold one.

The Newcastle defender made the move to St James’ Park from Aston Villa in the summer of 2016, and went on to make 34 Championship appearances for Rafa Benitez’ side.

Whilst he did not impress on a consistent enough basis, the 27-year-old still has a lot to offer, and after the Chronicle reported yesterday that the Republic of Ireland international could be made available for transfer, Leeds should not hesitate to make a move.

Standing at 6ft 2in, Clark cuts an imposing figure, and would be the ideal replacement for Bartley at Elland Road, should the Swansea man not return to the club, as is expected.

He is strong in the air, quick along the ground and decisive in the tackle. He would add a certain level of authority to the Leeds backline, and would help them continue their impressive defensive record.

One potential problem involving any kind of deal would be in convincing the centre-back to drop down a division to the Championship, although the offer of regular first-team football could help sway him into making the switch from Tyneside to West Yorkshire.
