Leeds United have been linked with the £6 million-rated striker.
According to a report from The Evening Telegraph, Leeds United are interested in signing Jack Marriott.
The 23-year-old striker has been on fire for Peterborough United this season, though he did not look the same player against Premier League opposition on Saturday.
Leicester City ran out 5-1 winners at the ABAX Stadium in an FA Cup fourth-round meeting and although Marriott is clearly a talented hitman, he is valued at around £6 million (Evening Telegraph) and should Leeds be wary of making such a bid?
Marriott’s form in League One – 18 goals in 28 games this season – is the reason behind his price-tag, but Leeds should be cautious of any prolific striker at that level, evident by Billy Paynter’s failure at Elland Road.
United signed the former Swindon Town hitman on a Bosman in 2010, having scored 37 goals in his previous two seasons in League One, but Paynter struggled with the step up and only wound up scoring three goals in 27 Championship games for the West Yorkshire outfit.
Injuries did him no favours, but even when fit there was an obvious struggle with the standard and it’s a gamble to assume that Marriott wouldn’t suffer the same jitters.
The Posh marksman might well prove himself a capable striker in the Championship, but £6 million is a lot of money for Leeds to gamble with and his performance against Leicester – the quality of teams who United aspire to face every week – and the fact he is unproven outside of League One means it’s a risk and one that involves a careful study before taking.
