Should Leeds target bargain move for QPR’s Jack Robinson?

Leeds United’s defence needs reinforcements during the summer transfer window.

Amongst the areas of the Leeds squad that Paul Heckingbottom may feel that he will need to address during the summer, it is highly likely that the Whites’ defence will be one of the main priorities.

Leeds’ back five have failed to recreate the consistency and reliability that made them so difficult to break down last season, with Rob Green, Kyle Bartley and Charlie Taylor all no longer at the club, and Pontus Jansson and Luke Ayling not quite as impressive as last term.

Depth has been a problem for Leeds this season. Liam Cooper has stepped into a first-choice role in the centre, and Matthew Pennington was brought in on loan to replace Bartley. Meanwhile, the Whites began the season with no recognised left-back, with right-footed pair Gaetano Berardi and Vurnon Anita shouldering most of the burden on the left until Laurens De Bock’s January arrival.

There are positive additions that have already been made, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Tom Pearce stepping up from the under-23s, while Lewie Coyle will bolster the options further in the summer when he returns from his loan spell. But not adding further options would be a mistake.

Leeds’ transfer budget in recent windows has not been the biggest in comparison with some of their second tier rivals, so any bargains that they could land along the way could be most welcome. And one player that they certainly should look at is Queens Park Rangers defender Jack Robinson.

Robinson has made 28 Championship appearances this term, and is on Sheffield United’s radar, according to the Sunday Mirror (11/03; page 67). Though normally considered a left-back, he has made most of his appearances at centre-back this season. That versatility would make him an extremely valuable signing for Leeds, especially as transfermarkt shows that he is out of contract at the end of the season, so would cost Leeds nothing.

Signing the former Liverpool starlet on a free – if a deal happened – would, hopefully for Leeds fans, not be their most exciting signing of the window by any means, but it may be a very good piece of business if they managed to get him at Elland Road.

He would add depth to several positions in the side – he has also played in central midfield this term – and his arrival would not hurt Heckingbottom’s remaining budget too much at all.
