West Brom, Swansea and Bristol City all fancy Borjan, and Leeds should join the race.
Marcelo Bielsa’s transfer priority this summer will be to add a top-quality striker to Leeds United’s ranks, but the new Argentine manager must not stop there in his bid to build a squad capable of promotion.
A new left-back, centre-back and a winger will also be high on his shortlist. But a new goalkeeper could be considered just as important as signing a prolific talisman.
That is because Leeds have sold Felix Wiedwald to German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, just one season after the German was brought to Elland Road from Werder Bremen.
The lofty stopper was thought to be somewhat of a coup after being Werder’s first choice during 2016-17, but after 30 appearances, he was ostracised and replaced by Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
Though the latter excelled between the sticks towards the end of the season, Leeds need an experienced, commanding stopper who can keep the goals out but also organise the defensive line.
That should see Bielsa turn his attention towards 38-time Canada international Milan Borjan, who currently turns out for Red Star Belgrade. But Leeds would not be alone in their pursuit for the 30-year-old.
Championship trio West Bromwich Albion, Bristol City and Swansea City are all keen on Borjan according to Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (Wednesday, 22:12), after a near-immaculate 2017-18 campaign which saw the goalkeeper shine in Red Star’s Serbian SuperLiga triumph.
Red Star won 32 of their 37 league matches, as Borjan kept a huge 26 clean sheets in 46 outings, and conceded just 22 goals. An impeccable record, that was one of the key ingredients in Red Star’s season.
It comes as no surprise, then, that Borjan is interesting clubs from England, and Leeds must make sure they are one of those. Beating West Brom, Swansea and Bristol City to Borjan could be the club’s best bit of business this summer.
