Should Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford be worried about the emergence of Tottenham Hotspur wonderkid Troy Parrott? Potentially.
Bamford is no closer to declaring for the Republic of Ireland and said earlier this month that he wants to focus on Leeds for now.
Thing is, time waits for no man and the England-born striker might be yesterday’s news in Mick McCarthy’s eyes if the Tottenham prospect keeps enhancing his reputation.
The Spurs product has netted three goals in his last two games for Ireland’s Under-21s and McCarthy revealed on Tuesday [RTE Sport] that he could potentially call the 17-year-old striker up for senior games against Georgia and then Switzerland next month.
Parrott offered a glimpse into his exciting potential with some stand-out displays on the North London club’s pre-season tour during the summer, though he is yet to make a competitive debut under Mauricio Pochettino.
Bamford is certainly doing the business with Leeds, scoring four times in six Championship outings this season and the former Middlesbrough marksman – a £10 million signing in the summer of 2018 [BBC Sport] – might be an attractive option for McCarthy if he makes a decision on his international allegiances.
But the truth is that the demand for Bamford will gradually diminish as Parrott’s star continues to rise.
McCarthy could of course have both players in his Ireland set-up, but the longer that the Leeds star makes him wait, the more he’ll look to young Parrott as the country’s leading striker.
