Should Leeds look at Tottenham’s Juan Foyth in January?

Leeds United were linked with Tottenham Hotspur defender Juan Foyth, and he may now be available during the January transfer window.

While Leeds appear to be in a fantastic position right now, those involved with the Whites’ recruitment may well be feeling the pressure after two lacklustre January windows in a row that certainly played a part as the club’s promotion hopes faded away on both occasions.

Marcelo Bielsa likes to work with a smaller squad, so the Elland Road faithful should probably not expect a raft of signings in the winter. And it would be no surprise if Izzy Brown and Patrick Bamford returning from long-term injuries leaves Bielsa arguing that he does not need to strengthen his attacking options further.

But he should have his eye on potentially signing a new defender. The likes of Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi have all impressed this term, but already, all three men have been out of the side due to injury this season.

That is why the London Evening Standard’s report this week that Spurs could consider letting Juan Foyth go in January should alert Bielsa when the window opens.

Foyth was linked with Leeds in the summer and actually commented on the links in an interview with Fox Sports Argentina in June. He played down the chances of a switch to Elland Road but did praise Bielsa.

Now that he is reportedly set to be available, Leeds should consider making a move for the Argentinian that Spurs signed for £8 million last summer (via BBC Sport).

With Mauricio Pochettino as his head coach, the Whites can be confident that he should have the tools to suit Bielsa’s system and make an impact in a potential promotion race.

And for Foyth, impressing at Leeds could improve his situation at Tottenham or perhaps put him in the shop window for the summer. He would surely find it easier to get a good move away if he has enjoyed a promising loan spell rather than sat on the periphery of Spurs’ squad for several months.

Leeds look set to not need a number of signings in January, but trying to add Foyth to their ranks could be a very good move given his reported availability. And with a Premier League debut looking some way off for the youngster as things stand, Spurs should be more than happy to open negotiations if Bielsa comes calling.
