Should Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa keep Vurnon Anita this season? Who knows when he could need his versatility.

It doesn’t appear as if Vurnon Anita has the most promising of futures at Leeds United.

The 29-year-old was not given a squad number by Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa and the Argentine was speaking about his future on Thursday.

Bielsa told The Yorkshire Evening Post: “For example I can say that because of Dallas’ injury it could have been a good thing to have Anita with us, it would have been better for me but I think it would be unfair to keep a player with us if he doesn’t have the possibility to get the time he deserves.”

Going by those comments, it sounds like Bielsa is willing to let Anita leave Leeds in search of the first-team football that he cannot offer – but should the Whites keep him?

The three-time Netherlands international is arguably Leeds’ most versatile player and the former Newcastle United ace can play left and right-back, in addition to defensive and central midfield.

He clearly has a lot of facets to his game and letting someone like that leave has to be considered a risk.

What’s more is that Anita has never been used in midfield, his primary position, at Leeds.

Admittedly there isn’t much room for him in midfield at the moment, but Leeds have a long season ahead of them and the diminutive Dutchman – a promotion winner with Newcastle in 2017 – simply must be a useful player to have in reserve.

His versatility could come in very handy for United at some stage this season.

Vurnon Anita of Leeds United arrives prior to The Emirates FA Cup Third Round match between Newport County and Leeds United at Rodney Parade on January 7, 2018 in Newport, Wales.
