The future of Gareth McAuley remains unclear after it was confirmed West Bromwich Albion would be releasing the defender this summer.

McAuley is one of three out of contract players at the Hawthorns, alongside Boaz Myhill and Claudio Yacob, who will be leaving the Baggies when their current deals expire at the end of this month.

Although now 38-years-old the defender still has plenty to offer and was a regular Premier League performer up until the 2017/18 season.

McAuley has quickly been linked with Rangers by the Belfast Telegraph following this news as new manager Steven Gerrard continues to overhaul his squad at Ibrox.

That is why Leeds United should perhaps take a look at the Northern Ireland international as they still lack experience and personnel at centre-back.

Whether or not McAuley is the sort of player new Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa would want or not is debatable, but with 189 appearances in the second tier of English football he could be a great influence both on and off the pitch at Elland Road.
