Leeds United should consider rivalling the Premier League sides chasing Blackburn Rovers star Charlie Mulgrew.
Heading into Leeds’ clash with Hull City next Tuesday, Thomas Christiansen already knows that he will not be able to call upon Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips, Eunan O’Kane and Samuel Saiz due to suspension.
Both Cooper and Saiz will miss the next four games, while the holding midfield pair of Phillips and O’Kane will sit out the clash with the Tigers and then the subsequent fixture against Cardiff.
The situations surrounding the quartet arguably highlight that Leeds do not have as much depth in certain areas as Christiansen would probably like. There are enough young players within the squad, but perhaps a little more experience would be welcome at this stage of the season.
Therefore, perhaps Leeds should consider rivalling the likes of Crystal Palace and Southampton for Blackburn stalwart Charlie Mulgrew. The Mirror’s live transfer feed (21st January 2018; 03:20) reported that the Premier League pair were keen on the former Celtic man.
The 31-year-old is Blackburn’s joint-leading goalscorer this season with 11 goals coming from midfield – Leeds-owned Marcus Antonsson is behind Mulgrew and Bradley Dack with seven goals – and his versatility would surely make him a brilliant addition for most Championship sides.
Mulgrew has predominantly played in the centre of midfield at Ewood Park, but he is also capable of playing at centre-back and at left-back – which is a position, before the signing of Laurens De Bock, that has certainly caused Leeds problems.
Having an experienced option who could play in most positions in defence or midfield would be especially welcome at this point when Leeds have so many suspended. And while those suspensions will all end during February, the current situation should arguably act as a warning to Christiansen as the final week of the January window begins.
