Rob Green was arguably Leeds’ best player during their defeat to Huddersfield Town.

When Rob Green joined Leeds in the summer, it was hardly surprising that the Whites only handed the former England goalkeeper a one-year deal (via Yorkshire Evening Post).

Green had barely played for Queens Park Rangers last season and was already well into the twilight of his career when he joined, so while he was always going to be a good short-term option, there were perhaps some doubt about how suitable he would be for a longer stay.

But following his display against Huddersfield Town, it is surely fair to say that a contract extension could be a smart decision for the Whites.

Though Leeds lost at the John Smith’s Stadium, Green arguably emerged from the game with a tremendous amount of credit after a strong performance, and perhaps alleviated a lot of concerns fans may have about him.

The 37-year-old made a string of extremely impressive saves to keep the score down, and he showed that age is having little impact on the other aspects of his game.

One of the most impressive aspects of Huddersfield’s play was the way that they threaded balls through the lines that the Leeds back four often struggled to anticipate, and they would have led to several more chances had Green not been so quick off his line on a number of occasions.

His punching and catching from crosses was also strong, and his distribution – he was frequently used to help alleviate the pressure on the back four that was applied by a Huddersfield side who showed a tremendous amount of desire – was consistent.

And with Marco Silvestri’s recent display against Sutton highlighting that he does not appear to be learning from the problems that he has had for the majority of his Leeds career, Green’s assured performance against the Terriers surely confirmed that he is the one who can provide some stability for the next couple of years, even if he spends the majority of the remaining time he is with the club as someone else’s understudy.
