The Leeds United goalkeeper has been linked with a surprise summer move to Arsenal but are the Gunners really interested?
Leeds United fans would be forgiven for double-taking when they read the Sun’s claim that Arsenal are lining up a summer swoop for goalkeeper Rob Green (02/07/2017 page 63).
After all, the veteran only agreed a one-year contract extension a few months ago and, at 37, he is unlikely to want to play second fiddle to Petr Cech at the Emirates Stadium, especially without the prospect of Champions League football to look forward to.
The more suspicious Leeds supporters may have had a wry smile at the timing of the report, following hot on the heels of the Whites’ signing of Felix Wiedwald from Werder Bremen.
At 27, the German stopper is 10 years younger than Green and will not have agreed to a move unless he was planning on being the first-choice option from the outset.
The latter’s contract situation means Leeds may simply be signing a longer-term replacement, but Green could be worried about the arrival of a player who featured 25 times in the Bundesliga last season.
It will come as no surprise to football fans already growing tired of the ongoing transfer speculation that some stories are simply put out there to generate interest in a client or inadvertently voice their intentions.
Green could quickly go from undisputed first choice to back-up stopper at Leeds, with his career petering out rather than ending on the high of being a regular starter at a genuine title contender next season.
If he is going to be on the bench, perhaps Arsenal’s is more enticing. That said, something suggests this story is not all it seems.
