Leeds United boss Paul Heckingbottom surely needs to have a think about his goalkeeper options during the summer.

While Bailey Peacock-Farrell is doing all he can to make it clear to Leeds head coach Paul Heckingbottom that he can handle being the Whites’ number one next season, it would still be a gamble for the Leeds boss to not make any additions to his options between the sticks during the summer.
The Elland Road faithful would probably not mind if they had already seen Felix Wiedwald’s last appearance for the club, while Andy Lonergan’s disappointing spell as number one earlier in the campaign perhaps makes using him as Peacock-Farrell’s understudy next term a slight risk.

In fairness to Peacock-Farrell, the form that he has shown this term suggests that he is not far off being good enough to be the side’s undisputed number one. So perhaps Heckingbottom should consider trying to get a veteran stopper in for one year as a safety net before perhaps promoting the likes of Will Huffer or Kamil Miazek to the first-team bench.
Of course, the obvious suggestion for that summer target is Rob Green. Green was superb during his brief spell with Leeds, but, from the outside, it arguably seems a long shot for the goalkeeper and the Whites to reach an agreement on a second stint at Elland Road.

One player that may be worth considering therefore, is Julian Speroni. The Crystal Palace legend is out of contract this summer, according to transfermarkt, and given that he currently earns £25,000 a week – via Spotrac – he would surely not be out of Leeds’ price range even if they offered a lower wage.
The 38-year-old’s best years may be behind him, but he has been a fantastic servant for the Eagles and has made 11 top flight appearances this term, proving that he still has something to offer.
Leeds arguably do not need a new number one – and need to focus the majority of their transfer budget on other areas of the squad – but should be looking for an experienced stopper who can step in if Peacock-Farrell needs to be taken out of the firing line, and Speroni could be the perfect option for a year, or two perhaps.
It may not be the most exciting signing that Leeds make all summer, but if they did decide to make an approach, it could be one of their smartest deals.
