Jordan Botaka simply could not cut it in English football as his move to Leeds United came with excitement and optimism, but ended in disarray and disappointment.
The 24-year-old speed machine joined Leeds in the summer of 2015 in what was a signing inspired by former owner Massimo Cellino, with Uwe Rosler in charge during Botaka’s first few months.
But just 14 appearances later, and a frustrating loan spell with Charlton Athletic that saw the versatile attacker score just two goals in 29 games, Botaka was offloaded by the Whites.
He joined Belgian top tier side Sint-Truiden, where has has rediscovered not only his shooting boots but his swagger and dazzling footwork that saw Leeds pay around £1million for the 15-time DR Congo international.
Right now, Botaka is at the peak of his game after scoring three goals in two games for his current side as they battled for the prized Europa League spot.
Botaka posted his latest goal on Instagram, as he curled an exquisite effort from the edge of the box to help his side draw 2-2 with Oostende.
So, did Leeds give Botaka a fair shot at shining in English football? Just 14 appearances for the Whites in his first season, only three of which he started, suggests not.
Combine that with his excellent form right now, Leeds were perhaps too quick to offload the fleet-footed attacker.
