Sam Gallagher has starred on loan at Birmingham during 2017-18, so should Leeds consider a move?
It is no secret that Leeds United need a new striker at Elland Road. The lack of a proven goalscorer in England’s second division is arguably one of the main reasons behind their inability to match 2016-17’s campaign.
Pierre-Michel Lasogga managed just 10 goals during his time in Yorkshire and has returned to parent club Hamburg, after failing to earn a permanent deal.
Meanwhile, Caleb Ekuban has scored just two goals all season, with one of those coming in the Championship. It has even seen teenager Ryan Edmondson given a go up front.
If Leeds are to mount a promotion challenge next season, Paul Heckingbottom needs to bring a striker capable of finding the back of the net on a regular basis in the Championship – one that has proven he can do it in the past.
The Whites are interesting in Abel Hernandez, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, but his wages at Hull City are believed to far exceed what owner Andrea Radrizzani would be comfortable paying.
If the club do indeed miss out on Uruguay international Hernandez, they should be turning their attention to Southampton target man Sam Gallagher after a decent second loan in the Championship.
Gallagher, 22, is renowned for his aerial prowess and although his goal tally is not amazing – 17 in 89 Championship fixtures – is it his link-up play that is more valuable. It would see the likes of Samu Saiz reach double figures.
Standing at 6ft 3in, Gallagher would give Leeds another dimension in attack that would benefit the Whites in both the final third and at the back from set pieces. He is a must, if the club fail to land Hernandez.
