Lee Evans’ Wolves career looked in jeapordy when he was loaned to Wigan in the summer – especially with Wolves possessing the money to buy real quality.
It says a lot about the quality of Wolves squad that they can afford to loan out a number of players who played an important role in the first-team last season.
Players like highly-rated midfielder Lee Evans. The former Wales Under-21 ace had started 29 Championship games in the last two seasons for Wolves but with Ruben Neves and Alfred N’Diaye high-profile arrivals at Molineux, Evans was loaned out to Wigan Athletic for the season.
Though the 23-year-old is doing his best to ensure that Wolves don’t forget about him. Evans has made a real impact at League One’s second placed side, forming a solid partnership in central midfield and starting 12 of 16 games.
“The talent he has in him is unbelievable – he just has to believe in himself more,” thrilled Latics boss Paul Cook told Wigan Today after Evans’ 35-yard screamer saw off Crawley Town in the FA Cup on Saturday.
“You’re then looking for a moment of magic to unlock the door, and Lee is someone who has that in his locker.”
On current form, there are few better midfielders in League One than the in-form Evans – though he still has to prove that he can perform at such a level on a regular basis in the second tier, or possibly even the Premier League with Wolves favourites for promotion.
The former Newport County prospect may be concerned that his opportunity at Wolves has passed him by with the Championship league leaders possessing the financial clout to add real star quality to their squad.
But Evans is giving himself the best possible chance of a fresh start at Molineux once his loan spell at Wigan comes to an end.
