There isn’t much speculation about Leeds United signing a senior striker.
From Alfie Hughes to Helder Costa, Leeds have signed a lot of players this week.
By our count, Director of Football Victor Orta wrapped up no fewer than seven transfers over the past six days but, worryingly, not one of them is a striker.
Well, Rafa Mujica, who joins Leeds from Barcelona, is a number nine, but he’s only 20 years old and it’s thought that he’ll go into Carlos Corberan’s Under-23 side this season.
There’s a month to go until United kick off their Championship season away at Bristol City and, as things stand, Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford remain the Whites’ only senior strikers.
It’s a problem for Leeds and so too is the lack of speculation about signing reinforcements.
Roofe and Bamford are by no means bad strikers, but both of them missed large chunks of last season through injury and it undeniably cost the Whites, whose automatic promotion bid floundered in the final few weeks of the previous campaign.
Even when fit, neither are going to reach Tammy Abraham or Chris Wood figures, which begs the question if Orta and Bielsa are taking a massive risk by not signing a new number nine.
Bamford, a £7 million signing last summer [The Daily Mail], scored nine goals in 23 Championship games last term, while £3 million hitman Roofe [Yorkshire Post] ended up with 15 from 33 outings.
They missed 36 league games between them and if they suffer similar absences this season, Leeds suffer in a big way.
