Reading have made a £5m bid for Newcastle’s Karl Darlow but should Huddersfield consider a move?
As they prepare for life in the Premier League in 2017/18, Huddersfield Town have been dealt a blow in their pursuit for a new goalkeeper.
Danny Ward spent the last season on loan at the John Smith’s Stadium from Liverpool, playing 46 games in all competitions for the Terriers as they won promotion from the Championship against the odds.
Huddersfield’s Danny Ward at the end of the game
Huddersfield manager David Wagner admitted after his team’s playoff final victory over Reading that he would speak to Reds boss and his friend, Jurgen Klopp, about bringing Ward back to Yorkshire – but those talks proved unsuccessful.
“I’ve spoken with Jurgen and unfortunately he’s made the decision that Danny Ward has to go back to Liverpool,” Wagner was quoted by the Daily Mail.
It leaves the German having to look elsewhere if he wants a new option between the posts, but perhaps fellow promoted side Newcastle United might have the answer.
The Sun reports that Reading are going to try and test the Magpies’ – who have their own decisions to make in the ‘keeper department – resolve with a £5m bid for Karl Darlow.
Darlow played 36 matches for Newcastle last term and was a key part of them winning the title and having the best defensive record in the English second tier.
Therefore it could be argued that the 26-year-old deserves his chance in the top flight (having played nine Premier League games to date) and if Rafa Benitez won’t give it to him, maybe Wagner should.
