Glasgow Rangers are reportedly hoping to win the race to sign Harry Wilson, but could the Ibrox side have the perfect backup plan already?
Wilson is a fantastic talent. He scored a number of goals from the wing during his loan spell with Hull City this past season, and he would undoubtedly be a brilliant addition if the Gers win the £250,000 race to sign him on loan. However, winning the chase looks set to be considerably easier said than done.
The Sun suggested that Leeds United, Aston Villa and Huddersfield are also keen on signing the wide-man during the coming months. And given that at least one of those sides will be playing Premier League football next term, it would perhaps be wise for Gerrard to consider alternative options.
But perhaps those alternative options do not need to come from elsewhere given the form that Glenn Middleton showed for the Gers’ development side following his January move from Norwich City.
Middleton has been superb over the last few months. He has bagged a ridiculous number of assists and was also not afraid to get onto the scoresheet for the development side.
With Daniel Candeias and Jamie Murphy two of the players who impressed this past season, Rangers do not necessarily need to go out and sign a marquee winger – though a deal for Wilson would certainly see their squad improve significantly and would enable Murphy to perhaps move into the middle.
And with other areas of the squad perhaps requiring more urgent attention right now, Gerrard should seriously consider shelving plans to sign a new winger if Wilson heads elsewhere and promoting Middleton to the first-team as his form in recent months suggests that his potential is frightening.
