Should Foderingham-chasing Aston Villa offer Rangers Ross McCormack?

Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham has been linked with an Ibrox exit this summer.

According to a recent report from the Scottish Daily Star (05/07; page 47), Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham is attracting Aston Villa’s attention with Allan McGregor looking set to be Steven Gerrard’s number one at Ibrox next season.

Foderingham has been a tremendous servant for the Light Blues, but it would be a surprise if he was happy to be an understudy for the coming season. And it appears that Aston Villa are keen to offer him a way out of the Scottish Premiership side this summer.

However, it has been well-publicised that the Villans go into this off-season with some financial concerns, so perhaps that could throw some doubt over a potential pursuit of Foderingham – unless Villa look to put an attractive offer on the table that does not involve the Championship side paying Rangers a fee.

Birmingham Live reports that Aston Villa are hoping that they will be able to offload £12 million signing Ross McCormack this summer after a nightmare spell at Villa Park, and they are prepared to take a major financial hit to ensure that he does move on during this window.

The report on McCormack’s situation comes less than a year since Rangers enquired about their former forward’s availability – as reported on the Daily Mail’s live transfer blog (31/08/17; 10:57).

Of course, Rangers were under different management at that stage and Gerrard will have his own attacking targets ahead of his first season with the Gers, but with the club looking light in that area of the field, perhaps Villa will attract some interest if they suggest that there could be some scope for a swap deal that sees McCormack move to Ibrox and Foderingham head to Villa Park.

McCormack’s wages may be an issue, but he should be willing to accept a significantly lower salary after such a disappointing time with the Villans. And for Villa, it may represent the ideal way for Steve Bruce to land one of his targets and take some of the pressure off the books by offloading the 31-year-old.

McCormack has not enjoyed a good time at Villa, but his spell with Melbourne City last season highlighted that he does still possess that lethal touch that saw him establish himself as one of the best Championship strikers during his times with Leeds United and Fulham.

His versatility would make him an asset to Gerrard with the competitive fixtures quickly emerging on the horizon, and they would be in a similar boat to Villa if they did have any interest in a potential swap in that they would be landing a potential target – if they were keen – and facilitating that by offloading a player who looks set to be on the periphery next season.
